AOCDS offers a variety of optional insurance benefits that may help further protect you and your family. These benefits include salary continuance, group term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage.

Salary Continuance The AOCDS salary continuance group plan provided by Unum pays 66.67% of your average monthly earnings (including overtime and other pay additives) to a maximum monthly benefit of $5,500. For "off-duty" disabilities, benefits are payable after a 30-day "elimination" period; for "on-duty" disabilities, benefits are payable after the expiration of Section 4850 pay. Your first check should arrive approximately 30 days after you have satisfied the elimination period, providing our insurance carrier (Unum) is able to obtain the necessary information to approve your claim. The maximum benefit period is 36 months (24 months for stress and substance abuse claims). Benefits will be paid in addition to any accumulated leave that you may use while on claim. Benefits will be reduced, dollar for dollar, by any payments that you receive from workers' compensation (including total temporary, vocational rehabilitation and permanent disability) and/or retirement.
During open enrollment, members may apply for salary continuance without having to complete a "health screen" unless they have been previously "declined" for coverage by Unum. In all cases, "pre-existing" conditions will apply. A pre-existing condition is a condition for which you have received medical treatment, or advice, during the 90-day period prior to your effective date of coverage. Claims for pre-existing conditions will be covered after 12 months of coverage (note the date of disability for a pre-existing condition must be at least 12 months after the effective date of coverage).
Group Term Life
The AOCDS group term life plan is insured by Anthem Blue Cross Life and provides up to $150,000 of coverage. Members are covered "on-duty," as well as "off duty," and benefits are payable in addition to any other benefits that your family is eligible to receive (including "in the line of duty" benefits). A certificate of coverage explaining benefits is available at the AOCDS benefits office.
The payroll deductions per pay period are as follows:

Group Term Life Upgrades
During open enrollment, anyone currently enrolled in the AOCDS group term life plan, who is actively at work, may upgrade one benefit level to a maximum of $100,000. For example, anyone enrolled in the $25,000 plan may increase to the $50,000 plan. Anyone in the $50,000 plan may upgrade to the $75,000 plan. In all other circumstances, except new hires, medical underwriting will be necessary. An "upgrade" form must be completed either at the AOCDS office or via mail (please call the AOCDS benefits office at 714-285-9900 if you need an upgrade form mailed to you.)
Group Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage (AD&D) Insurance
The AOCDS group accidental death and dismemberment plan is provided by Zurich Financial Services Group. Members may enroll in up to $150,000 of coverage. Members are covered both on and off duty. Benefits are payable for death due to an accident, as well as certain specified losses (including sight, speech, hearing or limbs), and will be paid in addition to any other benefits that your family is eligible to receive. Family coverage is available. Family members are covered at a reduced benefit. Please refer to the "certificate of coverage" which is available in the AOCDS benefits office for details on benefits payable for dismemberment (which may be less than the full amount), as well as policy exclusions (which include suicide, military service and flying as a pilot or crew member).
