CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING
WINNERS OF THE ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S ADVISORY COUNCIL & AOCDS
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM!
Thanks to the generosity of the Orange County Sheriff’s Advisory
Council (OCSAC), our sixth annual scholarship program recipients
doubled from five graduating high school seniors to ten! Instead of
donating $10,000.00 scholarships we are now able to give
$20,000.00. If you are questioning the future of our country please
read our ten recipient’s remarkable achievements. Their
accomplishments once again demonstrate that the youth of today are
certainly motivated, dedicated and committed to succeeding as future
leaders for our communities. The OCSAC and AOCDS are proud to
support the ten winners with a one time $2000.00 award.
To be eligible, the
applicants had to be a high school graduating senior with a 3.0 GPA
or better, their parent or legal guardian had to be an active member
of the AOCDS and the applicant had to be enrolled in an accredited
college by September 2007 with a minimum of 12 units. Each student
had to submit an application by May 31, 2007 accompanied by an
official sealed high school or home school transcript, a 300-word
essay based on their educational and career goals as well as a
listing of their community service and extracurricular activities.
To keep the selection
process as sterile as possible, all names were removed from all
documents and the winners were selected by a neutral person not
directly associated with the OCSAC or AOCDS. Once again the AOCDS
Board of Directors respectfully asked former Orange County Board of
Supervisor and child advocate William (Bill) G. Steiner to handle
the difficult task of selecting only ten recipients.
This year’s competition
yielded 20 outstanding and highly qualified applicants. Bill’s
criteria was the following, “My approach went beyond their GPA, to
an examination of the actual course work and classes that were taken
by the student, with particular credit being given to advanced
placement and honors classes. In terms of extra-curricular
activities and community service, I placed special emphasis on
demonstrated leadership on the part of the applicant. I also looked
for well-rounded students, who had more to offer than academic
excellence.”
Given these parameters, I would
recommend that applicants #1, #3, #5, #6, #7, #10, #11, #17, #18,
and #19 be award scholarships.
On behalf of the OCSAC
and the AOCDS it is our honor to profile the following ten
