This Holiday season, the AOCDS Board of Directors This Holiday season, the AOCDS Board of Directors wanted to give back and also help members of our community. AOCDS asked our members to recommend families in need. As first responders, they know and interact with people daily who could use some help during these unprecedented times of COVID-19, mass unemployment, wildfires or an unfortunate victim of a crime.Thank you to AOCDS members for the great response in recommending families and for helping us distribute the gift cards. Through donations to the AOCDS Memorial Fund, AOCDS purchased and distributed Target gift cards to 15 families so they can buy gifts and other supplies to celebrate this Holiday season. We know there are many more families in Orange County that could use some help, and we wish we could help them all. We will continue to give back to our community with the help of our members. Please donate to the AOCDS Memorial Fund so we can continue to support our members and the community at aocds.org/Donate.
Today we remember fallen hero, Undersheriff Robert Today we remember fallen hero, Undersheriff Robert Squires, the first Orange County peace officer killed in the line of duty, during an incident that became known as the bloodiest battle in OC history. On the evening of December 16, 1912, Sheriff Ruddock received a call that a young girl had been attacked by a drifer and fled into the hills of Tomato Springs. He immediately rounded up assistance and took off after the assailant. When the posse caught up with him, the fugitive taunted the men to come after him and then ran off into the foothills. When Squires caught up to him, both fired at each other at close range. Squires was killed.Meanwhile, others circled the assailant’s position. By mid-morning, there were more than 200 people involved in the shootout, including Company L of the National Guard. Several guardsmen were selected to charge the gunman, including Captain Nate Ulm, a former deputy sheriff. They slowly got into position, then attacked. Shots rang out and the gunman was killed by a gunshot through his temple. The “Tomato Springs Bandit,” as he was later called, was taken to Santa Ana.Thank you for your service and sacrifice. #fallenbutnotforgotten

Donations made to our memorial fund helped a deputy retrofit his home to allow him to care for his 17-year-old son who was badly injured in a car accident, assisted the family of another young deputy battling cystic fibrosis, a disease that would eventually take his life, and provided food and lodging for family members keeping vigil by the hospital bed of a Medal of Courage recipient who collapsed during SWAT tryouts.
