Member Advisement: Anthem Database Attack

We are aware that Anthem Inc., the country’s second-largest health insurer, has been attacked by hackers who broke into a database containing personal information for nearly 80 million of its customers and employees. This is believed to be the largest data breach ever reported by a healthcare company.

Anthem said it is likely that “tens of millions” of records were stolen, but the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact extent of the breach and how that information was compromised. According to Anthem, the breach exposed names, birthdays, addresses and Social Security numbers. It doesn’t appear to involve medical information or credit-card and bank-account numbers.
Based on the information that has been released, we believe our members who are Anthem subscribers are among the 80 million people whose personal information was compromised by these hackers. Members who subscribe to any of the Anthem plans AOCDS offers – Anthem PPO, Anthem Blue Card, Anthem High-Deductible, Anthem California Care and Anthem Value Plan – very likely have had their information compromised.

We are working closely with Anthem to find out more details and what we can do to try to prevent the compromised information from being disseminated and used illegally. Anthem is working around the clock to determine which of its members were impacted by this data breach. Anthem will notify impacted members by mail that their information was compromised.
Anthem has indicated it is not aware of any fraud that has occurred as a result of this incident against its members, but all impacted members will be enrolled in identity repair services. In addition, impacted members will be provided information on how to enroll in free credit monitoring.

Anthem has created a dedicated website (www.AnthemFacts.com) where you and other members can access information such as frequently asked questions and answers and a telephone number that members can call: 1-877-263-7995.

This afternoon California Attorney General Kamala Harris issued a CONSUMER ALERT in response to the data breach. I encourage you to review this and all of the information available.
It is important to note the systems that appear to have been compromised are controlled and managed by Anthem at the corporate level. Nonetheless, I ordered a review and security audit of all AOCDS internal IT systems. As a result it was confirmed to me that all of our data remains secure with all levels of security fully functional, intact, and up to date.

We will send out more information as it becomes available.
Thank you.
