Member Advisement: Deputy Attacked by Inmate

A deputy working at the Men’s Central Jail was attacked and stabbed by an inmate in an unprovoked assault this afternoon. The deputy suffered a severe laceration on his arm.
The deputy was working in the disciplinary isolation wing of the Men’s jail when an inmate reached out of his cell and stabbed the deputy with a contraband weapon hidden in the inmate’s hand. Deputies who were nearby administered first aid until jail medical staff were able to treat the injured deputy.
He was taken to UCI Medical Center. AOCDS staff responded to UCIMC. The deputy was treated and released late this afternoon.
I spoke with the deputy this evening. He is in good spirits and appreciative of the support of his partners. I offered any assistance AOCDS can provide.
As our jails continue to evolve into maximum security prisons, please continue to remain vigilant for your safety and the safety of your partners.
Thank you.
